Scientists just made a breakthrough by creating the first human-pig embryo that could revolutionize healthcare

...The ultimate goal of this type of work is to grow human organs inside of other animals as a means to ending the organ shortage that is costing thousands of Americans — who need a transplant — their lives each year.

Well, not just Americans but we get the point. Now cue the "OMG Frankenstein chimera!" lamentations of the Medieval segment of the public. I'm sure if there's a Christian Doomsday Clock somewhere, it has moved a few minutes closer to the Apocalypse now.

The clash of religions is a frequent subject these days. Whether it's really a thing, is another question. But when we talk of religions, civilizations, etc, very often the biggest constituency somehow gets omitted: the atheists. And they're actually more numerous than any religion, including Christianity and Islam.

Take the US for example. Being an atheist is considered a stigma, a shameful stain on the reputation, one that could destroy entire political careers. Being "godless" is worse than being black, Muslim, or homosexual. A meager 37% of Americans would choose an atheist for president. Because atheists are considered intolerant, immoral and blind for the beauties of creation. And that is wrong. Very wrong. Why? Let's see.

The annual meeting of the Illuminati/Bilderberger cabal in Davos has come up with a new motto: "Responsive and Responsive Leadership". Sounds nice and timely, what with the inauguration of President Douche who has vowed to shake up the existing world order, whatever that's supposed to mean.

The Brexit and Trump's victory delivered a blow on the liberal media like an extinction-sized asteroid of stupidity. How could the voters have failed to heed the warnings of so many smart analysts, diligent experts and rational fact-checkers!? How's that even possible?

Almost like a chorus, the media were instantly ready with the answer: see, we live in an era that's characterized by Post-Fact Politics. Pushed forward by media organizations like Forbes and NYT, the term "post-truth" became the word of the year in the Oxford Dictionary. A recent piece at HuffPo coined the term "post-truth nation", stating that the biggest problem of our time is not political or economic, not even rational - but the battle between fact and fiction.

Well, it seems Russia will not only refrain from retaliating to the US expelling some of its diplomats in response for the alleged Russian meddling in the US election - but Putin has also disregarded his foreign minister's recommendation to reciprocate, and will keep all US diplomats in place, and even invite their kids to the traditional New Year's festivities in the Kremlin:

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/russia-us-35-diplomats-expelled-9536358

This is a very calculated move by Putin. Despite the fact that he is a dictator, it's also doubtless that Putin is an astute leader who can assess the situation very quickly - unlike newly elected leader Trump who seems incompetent on virtually any issue. Putin wants to show himself as the good guy here, and I think Trump will no doubt take this bait rather easily.

Even George R.R. Martin Thinks 2016 Was ‘Too Much to Bear’

“Please, let this wretched year come to an end!"

I don't know what it was for you like, personally. But 2016 was quite a horrible year for the world, overall. Even despite the statistical fact that we currently live in the most peaceful and least bloody times in recorded history, 2016 presented us with plenty of reasons to think that the world was going crazy.

From the diary of an immigrant

Today I was smuggled across the border, and I finally made my way into Saudi Arabia. On the way here, I threw my ID card away (issued at the 1st Precinct of Varna, Bulgaria), so I had to tell the Saudi border control that I was a refugee from Donbass, Ukraine, looking for refuge from Putin's terror. They immediately believed me, and they put me on the train to Riyadh for free.

Some are arguing that Trump's unconventional and unpredictable, Twitter-enhanced behaviour regarding international affairs in the early stages of his ascent to the presidency, is not the workings of a madman, or more precisely, not just some random emoting of a spoiled teenage kid who has somehow incidentally found himself at the political scene and doesn't know what to do with his position. They are arguing that it's a well-calculated tactic called the Madman approach, previously employed by Nixon, where he is trying to make himself look dangerously unpredictable in the eyes of America's adversaries (and even the allies).

Those who organised yesterday's shooting of Andrey Karlov, the Russian ambassador in Turkey, likely wanted to take a revenge at Russia for her actions in Syria and to disrupt the ongoing warming up between Turkey and Russia. It seems they have failed in this, because no signs of another freezing of these relations are seen. The Turkish foreign minister is still going to visit Moscow for a trilateral meeting with Iran and Russia on Syria. The only thing the assassination will change is probably the level of security measures before the meeting.

In late November, the canals of St. Petersburg, the so called Northern Venice, are covered in ice. The few hours of sunshine and the extremely low temperatures make these days quite an ordeal. The ambulances crisscross the city in search of hobos and drunken people, taking them off the streets to prevent deaths from frostbite. Every winter about 600 people die on the streets of St. Petersburg, and that's not counting all those who've had their limbs amputated, and other victims of frost.

Okay, I get it, Trump is basking in his glory from scoring an early win on his promise to keep US jobs at home. He has talked Carrier into staying in Indiana rather than running off to Mexico for profit - which has earned him applause by locals. And some raised eyebrows from both libertarians and the business itself. The issue with such individual ad hoc "solutions" is simple: it could incentivize other companies to blackmail the government into giving concessions (tax cuts for individual companies) by threatening to leave the country.

"Trump's lavish dinner with Mitt will likely be played for laughs for a few days, but it is a symbol of something very serious — and very wrong — with Trump's transition from alleged billionaire to 45th president, who was elected by the disenfranchised, disadvantaged and forgotten Americans who genuinely struggle. Yet when Trump wasn't downing frog legs with his multi-millionaire new pal, Romney, he has been larding his cabinet with super-wealthy Republican loyalists who have completely ignored the needs of the very people who elected Trump."

President-elect Donald Trump continues to fill out his cabinet one millionaire — and frog leg — at a time

Well, here's a saying that I've heard around here. Not the one eating the pie is the crazy one, it's the ones who gave'm the pie in the first place.

We've all become perfectly aware by now that the EU has been under increasing pressure from hostile Russian propaganda, which threatens to undermine its relations with its partners, to block important decisions, and generally damage the credibility of the major European institutions by instilling fear and a sense of insecurity among the EU citizens. The purpose is to cause discord within the EU, and put its democratic values in question - and the means that the Russian government is using to achieve that are various, from think-tanks, to multilingual TV channels (RT), to pseudo information agencies and multimedia sources (Sputnik), trans-border social groups and religious organizations, to social media and internet trolls, and of course funding political parties (mostly Euroskeptic and right-wing) and populist movements.

That's basically what the part about Russia in the EU's recent report on Strategic Communication With A View To Counteracting Propaganda Against It By Third Countries says. This EU resolution only has an advisable character and doesn't impose anything on anybody, instead it recommends urgent measures for countering hostile propaganda, without prescribing bans on free speech or any such thing. All it does is identify a problem, and propose possible solutions within the law.

Scared of the little green men in green uniforms without any signs on them, are we? Don't know where they're coming from and what they want from us, eh? East Europe trembles with the shaking ground under their boots, and prepares to eat the dust from under their heels. The angry bear is stirring, and is preparing for a predator leap: RRRAWR! But this time it's masked, it has no insignia, and it uses RT to convince the world that it's actually not a bear, but a mere lamb. You gotta believe it, or else!

In the conditions of a transitional "monopolar" age in international relations which emerged at the end of the 20th and the beginning of this century, the Western states, just like one or two centuries ago within the framework of the so called Westphalian system, have tried to assume the role of vanguard, projecting (including through force) their own preferred values and institutions (free market, human rights, liberal democracy) upon other societies, regardless of their local cultural and historic specifics and peculiarities. In return, the latter (although to a varying extent) have shown a tendency to oppose this process and, and as paradoxical as that may seem, many of them have tried to uphold the integrity of the very institutions and norms previously imposed upon them by the West itself (like national sovereignty, territorial integrity, diplomacy as a primary tool at the international stage, etc). In this sense, the system of international relations continues to be based on the relations between center and periphery, where the role of generator and distributor of new values belongs to the West almost exceptionally.

The whole world was watching with dismay, morbid curiosity and growing horror how the tragicomical and rather vulgar reality show that the US presidential campaign unraveled for the last few months. And though the monopolar world model has fast been sinking back into history for quite a while, the choice of the American people was still bound to have long-lasting implications on a global scale. So the world was watching nervously, waiting to see the outcome of this "choice between two evils". We wanted to know which would be "the lesser evil" for us all. And we were bracing ourselves for what was to come, and making bets on who the next one to be bombed would be - presumably depending on America's choice.

In the context of the ongoing Ukrainian debacle, a number of Western authors, including reps of the so called "expert community", have often criticized Russia for violating international law. From such interpretations the conclusion comes out that Russia has not only delivered an unprovoked blow on a neighboring country, but it has eroded the fundamental principles of world politics: equality between all countries, territorial integrity, and refraining from external intervention in domestic affairs. Ultimately, the institution of sovereignty has been stomped over yet again.

When in the early morning of March 9, 1230, the Tzar of the Second Bulgarian Empire, Ivan Asen II decided to declare war on the short-lived Despotate of Epirus, he did that in an almost ritualistic way. He ordered the parchment of the peace treaty that had been violated by the Byzantines to be impaled on a spear. In the ensuing Battle of Klokotnitsa, the Bulgarian ruler turned the enemy into retreat and routed the Byzantine army, he captured their emperor Theodore Komnenos, and restored previous territories to the 2nd Bulgarian Empire.

See, we've had our own Mityo "Pishtova" (The Gun) for presidential candidate around here too, and though he couldn't win the election despite promising free meatballs and lemonade for everyone who dared vote for him, seems like the h'American* version of Mityo has earned a brilliant and shocking victory.
